Q1:- Attempt any four of the following :
- Draw the MO diagram of HF molecule and calculate its bond order.
- Derive Bragg's equation for diffraction of X-rays by crystal.
- Write mechanism of :
(i) Cannizzaro Reaction
(ii) Beckmann's rearrangement. - By using appropriate examples, discuss and illustrate the stereo chemical implications of SN1 and SN2 reaction.
- (i) Differentiate between Enantiomers and Diasteromers by using suitable example.(ii) Differentiate between Nematic and smectic liquid crystal.
- Explain why :
(i) Ice floats on water.
(ii) Addition of HBr to propene-1 does not follow Markownikoffl s rule in presence of peroxide.

Q2:- Attempt any four of the following :
- A completely exhausted zeolite softner requires 120 liters of NaCl solution having hardness 500 ppm can be softened by the zeolite.
- What would be the pH of a solution obtained by mixing 5 gm of acetic acid and 75 gm of sodium acetate and making the volume equal to 500 ml? Dissociation constant of acetic acid at 25oC is 1.75 x 10-5.
- Define order of a reaction. Prove that, if the concentration of one of the species in a second order reaction (A + B →C) is taken in excess the reaction behaves like a first order.
- Write a note on:
(i) Calgon conditioning
(ii) Liquid junction Potential. - Explain the mechanism of hydrogen evolution and oxygen absorption theory in electrochemical corrosion.
- (i) The solubility of silver chloride in water at 25oC is 0.00179 gm/L. Calculate its solubility products at 25oC .

- Define gross calorific value and net calorific value
of a fuel.The following data is obtained in a bomb calorimeter experiment:
Weight of crucible = 3.50 gm, Weight of crucible + fuel = 4.65 gm, weight of water water taken = 2000 gm , Water equivalent of calorimeter = 550 gm, Observed rise in temp. = 0.020C, fuse wire correction = 50 cal, Cotton thread correction = 1.5 cal.
Calculate GCV and NCV of the fuel sample if the fuel contains 5.5% Hydrogen. - Define the term lubrication. Mention important functions of lubricants. Describe any five important properties of lubricants.
- (i) Discuss the mechanism of boundary film lubrication.
(ii) Write notes on:
(a) Trans esterification
(b) Bio Fuel.

Q5:- Attempt any two of the following :
- (i) Define Complexometric titration. How is EDTA used in complexometric titraion.
(ii) To 20 ml, of a copper solution, after necessary treatment, were added 2 gm of KI and the liberated iodine required 11.2 ml, of decinormal hypo solution for titration. Calculate the strength of copper per litre in the solution. [ At . Wt. of Cu = 63.5] - (i) Define the term Bathochromic shift and Hypsorchromic shift with suitable examples.
(ii) Suggest a structure for an organic compound (Molecular formula = C9H12) consistent with the following NMR data:
(a) Singlet at δ 7.1 (3H)
(b) Singlet at δ 2.25 (9H) - (i) Calculate the λmax for the following using Woodward-Fieser rule:

(ii) Explain the terms Molecular ion peak and Base peak in the mass spectroscopy. A liquid compound gave a mass spectrum showing a strong molecular ion at m/z =156. The only fragment ions are seen at m/z = 127 and 29. Suggest a structure for this compound.
