SECTION-A
Answer any four questions
from the following:
- Explain briefly the materials of heating elements.
- What are the advantages of heating element?
- Discuss the methods of temperature control of
resistance ovens.
- Mention the advantages of dielectric heating.
- Discuss the relative merits and demerits of direct and
indirect electric arc furnaces.
- Explain different methods of induction heating. Give
some application of induction heating.
SECTION-B
Answer any four questions
from the following:
- What is the fundamental difference between electric arc
welding and resistance arc welding?
- Explain with a neat sketch how the spot welding is
carried out by a spot welding machine.
- With necessary figures, explain the process of carbon
arc welding and metallic arc welding.
- Compare A.C and D.C welding.
- Describe about the laws of electrolysis.
- What do you understand by the terms 'Rebuilding' and
'Hard facing'.
SECTION-C
Answer any two questions
from the followings:
- Define the following terms:
Luminous flux, Lumen, illumination, Lamp efficiency. - Enumerate the characteristics which the lighting scheme
should possess.
- Explain a refrigeration cycle by means of neat sketch.
SECTION-D
Answer any two questions
from the followings:
- Draw the speed-time curves for urban and suburban and
main line service. Also explain the following terms:
(a) Notching period
(b) Accelerating period
(c) Free run period
(d) Coasting period
(e) Retardation period - An electric train has an average speed of 42 km/hr on a
level track between stops 1400 apart. It is accelerated at 1.7 km/hr/s and
is braked at 3.3 km/hr/s. Draw the speed time curve and mention all the
appropriate terms.
- What are the various traction system in practice in our
country? Give the advantage of electric drives with its limitations and
discuss briefly the factors governing the final choice of traction system.

Answer any two questions
from the followings:
- What is an electric drive? Explain the major parts of
an electric drives also state the advantages and disadvantages of electric
drives.
- Explain with the help of suitable connection diagram,
the resistance control method used in d.c traction motors. List its
advantages and disadvantages.
- What are the requirements of electric drives for traction?
Explain a static control scheme used in a.c traction employing a.c motors.
